Food pantries need donations from residents

Like many other food pantries in the state, the Rockingham Community Action food pantry in Salem is struggling to keep its shelves stocked.

In this time of economic decline, many residents who were once living without a worry of how to pay their bills now find themselves struggling to make ends meet. Rent payments are missed, there is concern over how to pay for home heating fuel going into the winter months and people struggle to put food on the table.

Now, more people than ever before are turning to the food pantries for help feeding their families. Demand is at an all-time high, and the pantry supply is stretched.

We all feel the pinch of the economy in our pockets, but let’s try to think of others during this time of need and donate items to local food pantries.

Clean out your cupboards and donate nonperishables that you know you will never use. Or buy extra canned goods and boxes of pasta when they’re deeply discounted at the grocery store. Even if you can only afford to donate one item, it’s one more item another family didn’t have, and one more meal they will have on their table.

So let’s be good neighbors, and help each other through this tough time.
