Tornado spurs many
to aid neighbors
While life goes on normally for most of us, there are many people in Epsom and the rest of the tornado’s path for whom life will never be the same. Two weeks after the wrath of Mother Nature was visited upon us, the devastation of the twister is still painfully evident. Our hearts go out, of course, to the family of Brenda Stevens of Deerfield, the one fatality. It was a miracle her infant grandson survived the collapse of her home, for which everyone is grateful. But even if you have survived this catastrophe, how do you rebuild your life when your home is destroyed? It’s a hard road many people must now travel. Yet, within the disaster, many people also feel blessed. Robert White of Epsom was in the direct path of the tornado, watching as it snapped tall, ancient trees in his front yard. While he was trapped in his garage, he worried for his wife inside their home. Somehow, the winds left both buildings unscathed. “I feel blessed by God,” White told us. Wayne Murray of Deerfield also expressed his gratitude for all of those who came out to help him clear the enormous number of trees which fell on and around his home. Even a police officer in uniform helped. While no one wishes for disaster, it can bring out the best in some people. We’re seeing that now in the recovery stage of this event. On behalf of those hit by the tornado, thanks to all who have rushed to the aid of their neighbors. - Editorials published by Neighborhood News Inc. are written by an editorial board.
