A taboo subject that needs to told

Every so often, it pays to take a look at the salaries being paid to town and school employees. After all, that’s where a good chunk of your tax money ends up. In our comparison this week of Bedford salaries versus Goffstown, Bedford pays more. The most striking difference between the two towns is on the town side, with some salaries at least $10,000 more than their peers in Goffstown. There are, however, some factors to consider regarding higher salaries, including experience, length of service and education.

Talking about how much money one makes is a taboo subject. Those named are generally never happy about having that information published, and we understand that. But for those of us making perhaps a quarter of those large salaries (and probably feeling none too good about that), it is helpful to know that in a competitive market, Bedford is doing pretty well at maintaining qualified staff at reasonable cost. After all, we need to have well-run schools for our children, safe neighborhoods, paved roads (well, some still need dire attention in Bedford), and all the other functions provided by our local government.
